Ministry of Culture had blacklisted Attack on Titan & 37 other titles on Monday

The screening of Attack on Titan that was planned for "Japan Film Week" at the Shanghai International Film Festival was abruptly cancelled, just days before the start of the festival. The festival will run from June 13 to June 21, and the 10th Japan Film Week would have screened Attack on Titan and seven other works this year.

The Mainichi Shimbun paper reports that according to Japanese sources related to the matter, the anime was previously inspected and approved, but the film festival's executive committee were abruptly informed only on Tuesday that they could not screen the anime.

The Chinese Ministry of Culture announced on Monday that it has blacklisted 38 Japanese anime and manga titles, including Attack on Titan, from online or print distribution in China. Senior Ministry official Liu Qiang stated, "The list is the result of evaluations by investigators, reviews by the ministry and the opinions of experts. It aims to guide websites in the proper review and importation of comics and animations."

As of April 1, new regulations in China require video websites to seek approval to stream foreign media. At the time, the ministry began blacklisting titles that "include scenes of violence, pornography, terrorism and crimes against public morality" that would induce minors to commit crimes. Websites hosting this content were put under investigation.
