Spinoff series about Megumin launches in June

Yen Press announced on Friday that it has licensed the Konosuba: An Explosion on This Wonderful World! spinoff novel series. The first book is slated for release on June 18, 2019.

Kadokawa published the first novel in the spinoff series in June 2014, and the third volume shipped in May 2015. Original author Natsume Akatsuki wrote the story and Kasumi Morino provided the illustrations. The story centers on Megumin and her Crimson Magic Clan.

Morino also drew a manga adaptation. The spinoff novels have a sequel series titled Zoku Kono Subarashi Sekai ni Bakuen o!, which also has a manga adaptation.

Yen Press is also releasing the original KONOSUBA light novels as well as Masahito Watari's manga adaptation in English.

The original light novels center on Kazuma, a shut-in student who dies in a traffic accident, but meets the goddess Aqua after death. He is given the chance to reincarnate in a fantasy world and can keep one thing with him. When he decides to choose Aqua herself, they are both transported to their new lives. The pair go on quests to earn just enough to buy food, shelter, and clothing, and eventually hire the sorceress Megumin and swordswoman Darkness, who they quickly learn are just as useless as they are.

The novels inspired two television anime seasons. The first season premiered in January 2016, and the second season premiered in January 2017. Crunchyroll streamed both seasons as they aired in Japan. An anime film will open in Japan in 2019.

The novels are also inspiring a dungeon role-playing game for PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 4.
