Ugh, that is really lame. I guess, I am not really surprised though.

Leverage and access, kiddies. All About leverage and access. One more reason CR is getting into the production game I guess.

I've seen parodies in other anime, but perhaps a parody that is too direct crosses the line?

I know the first episode parodied every genre/series under the sun, but I don't remember any of these send-ups being mean-spirited or defamatory. However, I realize I'm approaching this from the perspective of someone who grew up in a country with an "anything goes" approach to satire.

Wow, they are really dropping the hammer on this one. I have to wonder if it was one specific parody that got them in trouble, or if their lawyers are just extra skittish. Because it's quite an extraordinary step to attempt to purge any and all traces of an episode from the internet.
(Not that they'll succeed, mind you. I'm willing to bet someone will fansub that episode just to make sure it never goes away completely.) |

Does not even need fansubs, CR always gets ripped anyway. |

Well, that's too late now, since it is already in the Internet...

It has to do with Japanese law (also seen in other countries in various ways.) Parodies are essentially unprotected and always illegal, but only taken down if the copyright owner objects. There's tons of parodies because most of the time the copyright owner doesn't object, sometimes because of fear of backlash. It is almost surely because of a specific complaint received by a copyright owner, but all parodies you've ever seen in Japan could theoretically receive such a complaint. US law is unusual on a global scale in providing a strong protection for parody no matter what the opinion of the copyright holder. At the same time, actions that do violate US copyright law with a criminal offense, as oppose to civil, can be prosecuted without the consent of the copyright holder. (The latter is what the TPP would cause Japan to adopt.) |

So will CR have the series in a sort of incomplete state forever or will they be able to replace it with the new episode 1 released in the discs eventually?
