I notice the Disgaea community is in a bit of an uproar over this, as everyone is salivating-waiting for modern releases of Disgaea 3 and Brighter Darkness, yet NIS is putting out what may indeed be more paid DLC overtop a game that was already $100+ if you bought it new with the season pass. At the end of the day, if I can just grab a small update and $3 DLC to complete the copy I already have, that is INFINITELY more ideal to the nightmare situation Atlus has caused with SMT Vengeance requiring an entirely new purchase.

Disgaea 7 is already in a bit of a shaky spot - a lot of Disgaea fans will regard 4 or 5 as the penultimate game in the series, and 6 was the first one to make the jump to 3D. It is fun and has a couple refreshing changes to the series' formula, but there is a lot of focus in 6 on phone-style auto-play modes while shrinking the strategy elements, and it ultimately is regarded as a massive misfire.

Disgaea 7 is only the second 3D attempt at Disgaea from NIS and though it improves a bit of 6's shortcomings, it also discarded some of 6's better ideas. One step forward, two steps back. It's not productive to debate whether or not the removed 2D sprites and animation were more charming before, but some of D7's notable omissions are the immensely popular MagiChange feature to turn your monster companions into weapons. The Item World is severely de-focused (you can 100% Disgaea 6 without ever stepping into it during normal play). And even small things like unique combat interactions and animations for characters stacked in a tower are gone. They've replaced some of these missing features with new ones and it can be debated about how much fun & utility they add, but the bottom line is that for a longtime series fan, spending $100+ to get the whole game, with more spending now on the horizon, and the feeling like NIS has gutted D6 and D7 and are slowly adding/selling back the removed features one-at-a-time is dropping morale within the community.

TLDR Disgaea 7 is a fun game, and if you go play Disgaea 1 Complete and La Pucelle Ragnarok first, I definitely recommend giving Disgaea 7 a look, you will probably have fun with it. But due to some really weird design choices/omissions it's also hard to specifically recommend D7 at full price, especially when you could play HD-Complete versions of Disgaea 4 and 5 for well over 120 hours for around $5 each.

That's why I almost always never buy games new these days unless it's from a good developer or one to show their updates will be free (Stat Ocean 2 R, Palworld, etc)

Anything from NIS/Capcom/Atlus/SEGA is definitely on the 'wait a year til the complete version comes out" category.

Every single disgaea game after 2 has had a special edition with all the dlc. Its just their modus operandi to get more sales after the people who cannot wait had spent their money. You save money but spend 1-3 years of time waiting.

If this is true it is hilarious given the discourse over the necessity of remastering or remaking games from less than 20 years ago.

However, most of their releases were on the PSP or Vita instead of a home console. It wasn't until Disgaea 4 Complete+ came out was it on a home console with the DLC bundled. The DLC for Disgaea games has been all separated aside from Disgaea 3 only after all of it was released on the PS3.

I fell off Disgaea after Disgaea 4 Complete+ (which was released 10/15/2019), which was after Disgaea 5 (released 3/25/2015), but before Disgaea 6 (released 1/28/2021). Something about not being able to beat Baal in Disgaea D2 and Disgaea Complete+ just left me a bit empty. It was definitely the elaborate grind for trophies, which I got all of the trophies in the original Disgaea 4 and in each Disgaea prior to Disgaea 4 Complete+, so I just wasn't feeling it.

However, after playing the other Disgaea games and then them releasing a DLC complete versions for other consoles always felt terrible. Like why did I pay full price at the time ($60) for the game and then it having $100+ in DLC, only to be released 2 years later for a handheld with all of the DLC plus some for $40? It just felt bad.

Disgaea 7 sounds like it is learning from the past, but I wonder if it will burn anyone's gears that did buy the original D7 DLC. Will D7 be praised for this?

There are usually a guaranteed weekly thread on most sites regularly discussing Disgaea asking "when is 3 or Brighter gonna be remastered?" I think it mostly just has to do with completionism - Disgaea 3 is not one of the better games in the series, but you can only play Complete on a Vita, and Brighter was ONLY ever on PS3 so by the time it released players likely were already moving to PS4, as that console came out the same year. Brighter had a metric ton of DLC, but never got a Complete edition to bundle everything either, so that and the fact it has everyone's favorite characters in an HD setting makes it the holy grail of Disgaea projects.

The re-releases of NIS games weren't really a thing until game companies started to see the success of the PSP and wanted to cash in on the portability. It's really interesting seeing you mention that you fell off, because that is about the same exact place I fell off too. Disgaea 3 is a massively-mind-numbing misfire of anime-school tropes with no real substance or payoff on PS3 (they may have fixed it on Vita), and it was the first one to nickel&dime you over DLC too. I beat the game, bought each DLC as it released, got the pass last minute for the special bonuses, and then was just so burnt out from it that when I finally got to rent and boot up Disgaea 4 & Valvatorez didn't instantly click with me.... I noped right the hell out of there for years.

Each Disgaea game is upwards of 80+ hours if you wanna see most of them, and the farther out they go from Laharl's original story, the harder it is to get me interested. I played Brighter more recently and it's okay - more Etna and Laharl, but it's also the umpteenth time I've tried to take one of the characters to lvl 1000 too, and the magic isn't as punchy anymore.

.....and I think that's one of the issues with Disgaea 7. A lot of the punchy unique stuff that people look to in the older games isn't immediately apparent in Disgaea 7. I think a lot of folks probably started tiring around Disgaea 4 Complete's release, and are probably looking for an excuse (Brighter) to rediscover the magic again when 6 is widely regarded as a flop ( the cast is really fun though) and 7 just kinda looks at a glance like it's going through the motions.

Disgaea 7 released with the season pass having an issue where DLC was not unlocking properly and NISA had to distribute some of it free in compensation. Players were NOT happy having to pay $100+ at launch for everything either, so I think it's already kind of soured some of the hardcore fans. I got it on sale myself, so a few more $$$ to avoid being bothered to by an entirely separate version is welcomed. I still get the vibe that it's got fans nervous though. It's a shame because if Disgaea 7 had launched at a $40 price it'd be a no-brainer to recommend it to new players or people that fell off the wagon, though I still suggest Disgaea 1 Complete to people coming in 100% blind.
