This series was never going to match the manga or the anime panel for panel or frame from frame. For the most part I thought they did a pretty good job of adapting the series to live action. There were even some changes I liked such as bringing Garp's story with Coby forward to show some more of the Marine side of things. It helps with worldbuilding for newcomers to the franchise.

When it came to changes I didn't like I could recognize the neccessity of a number of them for reasons such as budget limitations or things not really translating well to live action.

Still there were changes I felt were unnecessary when it came to characterisation and motives. One example would be when Luffy was offered food at the end of the second episode. The Luffy I know would have taken it whereas this version initially turned the food down and then only took one roll. It undercut the fact that Luffy is oftentimes an amoral even selfish character.

I've got only 2 problems with this show so far one of them being a plot hole(how did Luffy know Kuro was the bad guy when he was asleep for the reveal?) and some pacing issues. As for the reviewer's complaint about the dark scenes VFX flaws are a lot easier to hide in dark scenes (They are not necessarily wrong however) .

Also a huge shout out to the sound team for the Atmos Surround Sound during the Kuro fight. I rarely get to test let alone enjoy my sound system.

Edit: Did anyone else have mixed feelings spoiler[when they killed Merry]?

It's still cheesy and over the top but it captures the One Piece magic really well. I wish they treated Bebop like this.

Haven't watched, but my spouse(who has zero knowledge of OP) did and really enjoyed it.

I really liked it. The faster pacing and fight scenes made it stand out (though the cgi from Luffy's moves feel weird. If there is something that gets annoying is how Luffy never shuts up about the power of friendship like he was Yugi Moto or Sora from Kingdom Hearts

The way this was done really proved that they could "easily" adapt the rest of the series, no wonder Oda gave so much approval.

Making your heroic main character unselfish isn’t really a negative. This is especially funny when you see characters especially Luffy who people criticize for such behavior.

Also that bit with the food is totally in line with Manga Luffy. Yes, Luffy loves to eat and will usually take up any food somebody offers. But he's not so clueless or selfish that he'll pig out when offered food from people in need like the folks in that ruined village.

Except Cowboy Bebop isn’t cheesy or (mostly) over the top…

I feel like this was supposed to be the replacement for Luffy leaving his cut of the treasure with the town since Nami didn't steal any treasure from Buggy in the live action.

Honestly I had more faith in the live action than I probably should have before it came out, but I'm really glad that it ended up being good. It's sold me on it enough to finally start reading the manga (just finished chapter 41 today) despite the time commitment. I started rewatching the series with my mom a couple days ago and while I'm noticing more problems, it's still really great and she's enjoying it too.

But that's exactly who Manga Luffy is too. He's not Superman, he's not Funimation Goku. Luffy even explains that "a hero is someone who who shares their meat. I want all the meat for myself!" and uses a food analogy to admit he's not a great guy. He's done so many questionable and bad things in the series, especially when it comes to food. He literally tries to eat Karoo and even Chopper at times because of the slightest rumble in his tummy. On the way to Alabsta he eats out the crew's entire rationed food stock and nearly causes them all to starve. Then is fine with killing Karoo and using him as bait to catch a big fish, because Luffy also eats the bait and was still hungry. He absolutely would have eaten all that food, probably in one bite and then Nami would punch him for being greedy.

I actually have an idea of how it should be done. It came to me when I was watching a very famous auteur’s most recent film…

It’s so simple, so obvious, so artful in a way that’d make cinephiles salivate at its very mention. And that’s kinda what it comes down to: vision. Which is why I’m hoping on everything that One Piece’s (somewhat) success doesn’t cause a sudden explosion of Westernized Hollywood anime adaptations because they’d be dumb enough to see it as a one size, one style fits all model. As long as you don’t butcher the story and skimp on the visuals, “camp” works for One Piece… But knowing Hollywood, they’d try to apply it to everything else.

spoiler[Also, quick question: How do you add a avi/pic under your name? I’ve been trying to figure that out for the longest…]

Thanks… I think.

Must be different on Mobile; I can’t seem to find the ‘Profile’ link. Maybe it’ll appear when I try it on my PC.
