Didn't expect an article about one of my fave JRPG series to come out of ANN, even less such a comprehensive and well-written one, kudos!

Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria is still one of my favorite games of all time, messy (but also interesting and exciting!) story and scaled back Einherjar-relevance and all. The fights were just so challenging & gripping and the dungeon-exploration extremely creative and well-designed!
I also still have a massive soft-spot for Covenant of the Plume. The game was not very challenging, especially after the first playthrough, had some terrible enemy AI and was sadly stripped of voiced cutscenes in the West, but the more small-scale story with all the different character-plotlines and political intrigue in 3 different routes was super engaging. Such a shame those great characters never gathered a solid fanbase that would keep them alive with fanarts and such...

I was highly sceptical of the new game at first but despite (or rather because of, sadly) not being by tri-ace itself, it is starting to look pretty promising. Unlike Star Ocean 5 (and what I've seen of 6) it at least feels like it's setting the right priorities and will have some core gameplay that is at least solid. Shame for abandoning the old-style and going for a more mainstream action-game, tho.

Yeah, I still remember the BS requirements for the real ending over 20 years after:

-You had to notice that there is a random number on Lenneth's status page.

-Then you had to then realice that sending warriors to Valhalla raised this number by an amount and watching then die lowered it.

-You also had to realice that spoiler[Lucian] events lower the number more than other people's.

-AND THEN you had to realice you needed to lower that freaking number lower than 37 (Why 37?, dunno).

-You also had to send spoiler[Lucian] to Valhalla at an specific time.

-Thus you had to pull a calculator and do math to calculate when you should look for a new warrior and when to send one to Valhalla because if you didn't send anybody Freya will kill you and need that number lower than the said 37.

- Freaking finally, you had to visit specific sites at specific moments to watch scenes and finally trigger the real ending.

Maybe it had to do with 37°C being the average "normal" body temperature (the equivalent to 98.6°F), and since the game was all about people dying it wanted the player to keep it below that number, similar to how dead bodies go cold?

Just a wild guess, honestly.

While I enjoyed the article thoroughly, I found a few errors.

a woman disguises herself as guardsman
->
a woman disguises herself as a guardsman

Sakuraba's music is perfectly matched to game's mix
->
Sakuraba's music is perfectly matched to the game's mix

cite>Valkyrie Profile 2
->
Valkyrie Profile 2

That was the end of Valkyrie Anatomia's.
(Do you mean Valkyrie Anatomia?)

Edit: Thanks for editing the article!

The only Sony game system I've owned is the PSP, which finally granted me all those JRPGs I craved. I got the Lenneth port very soon after it came out and remember absolutely loving it. Valkyrie Profile, Jeanne d'Arc, and Popolocrois had some heavy rotation in my PSP, but I don't think I ever was able to finish Valkyrie Profile because it was so brutal.

I was new to that kind of playstyle, and VP soundly beat me up over and over. I'm pretty sure I got to Ragnarok without a party my first time because I didn't realize I needed to send them along the way and not just choose my final party at some kind of "Proceed to Ragnarok?" screen. Whatever happened, I made the WRONG choice. Despite my incompetence and its obtuse rules, I still have a huge fondness for it and its melancholy world.

...Hmm. I think it might be time to fire up the ol' PSP and see about maybe dealing with Ragnarok once again.

For all its jank, arcane mechanics, and wonky balance (I'm not sure you can beat some of the last bosses without cheese mechanics, to say nothing of the bonus ones,) I adore the original VP. To some extent its because of those imperfections- but the mood, the music, the fairly unique combat and the frankly amazing visual work all make it a favorite of mine. It also has the curious distinction of being one of the very few games that I think you need to play on Hard mode for- new dungeons (some of which are fairly inventive, like the math teleport maze, or the clockwork mansion,) and the conclusion to a few plotlines are locked behind Hard. Its also, curiously, the easiest mode...assuming you've figured out the mechanics.

Man. Now I want to replay it. Pity I have to wait til December.
