It's just an AV idol show now. Will we ever see another Macross where singing idols take a distant, very back of the auditorium seat to the plot and other characters?

NO. Not if Kawamori keeps steering the course for this franchise. He's made so many inexplicable decisions that have made at least half the franchise unwatchable or reduced the desire to import the shows among many fans of the original Macross, Macross: DYRL, or Macross Plus, the BEST entries in the franchise. I have no desire to import Mac 7 or Mac Delta because of the "silly singing characters" as much as the lack of ANY legal English translation of those series. The only Macross idol singer I really ever cared for was Minmay and her role/function got played out. If there was one thing they did BETTER in Robotech, it was taking the emphasis so much off of Minmay and giving a REAL rationale for the Zentraedi and other alien civilizations to pursue the SDF-1: they were going after a natural power resource, the Protoculture (energy, NOT human civilization like the original Mac defined it). I just never thought they really defined the Zentraedis' actions/motives in the original Macross that well. That something I have heard along the lines mentioned by at least one of the major Tatsunoko Mac producers that he appreciated about Robotech's redefinition of Macross. I still agree, however, that Studio Nue should have been credited for the basic story concept behind Robotech. It's very unfair things played out like that but at this point it would be like asking Disney to acknowledge that The Lion King was an unauthorized remake/adaptation of Kimba, The White Lion -- it's just not gonna happen in either case unless some honest person (in a position of power) miraculously does the right thing and acknowledges the truth that most of us with the knowledge about these things already know. Sometimes, I think it's a mixed blessing that the Macross license got so tangled up in Japan. We literally STILL got the BEST that series ever got anyway! I think after Plus, it goes downhill and with maybe the exceptions of Mac Zero and/or Mac F it just isn't worth it. Gundam, on the other hand, I think has been handled MUCH better and there are many, many good entries in that franchise among the UC and AU timelines. Unless you're looking hard to deny yourself any enjoyment, there's gotta be at least one show you like among the Gundam series and it doesn't have to be the original Gundam, either. They've remade the original Gundam so many times (at least 6 times at my last count, the best, most stylish remake I watched STILL being Gundam Wing) that you're going to run into the basic plotline and motives of the original series anyway. You can view it cynically as "not reinventing the wheel" or acknowledge that historically events/cycles play out the same again and again through human history, and the only thing that really changes are the names of the players! I seem to get less upset at the remakes within the Gundam franchise than I do like say 2 of the last 3 Star Wars films but probably only because in the live-action they NEVER seem to improve on the original version of the movie, anyway -- each re-edit and remake just makes the situation worse! It's Hollywood and they way overthink these things in committee (that's at least 3-5 times bigger than most production committees for Japanese TV series/movies) and waste anywhere from 20 times to at least 200 times more money than the Japanese companies ever waste on their film productions! |

Delta hit the new low point IMO for Macross. Previously it was M7, but I sat through and watched M7 and it redeemed itself at the end. Unfortunately I am still on episode 7 or 8 of Delta and no real desire to keep going. It's worth noting that I consider Macross 2 to be better then both M7 and Delta (gasp!).
Even Frontier took awhile for me to get into it.. so I do not have high hopes moving forward. |

Considering Delta's first part is way better than its second one, yeah, it will be useless for you to go further than episode 13. |

You think Kawamori cares about you leechers watching free Macross? The whole business purpose behind the latest Macross is to create artists and idols that studios and exec like him can make money using macross as a platform. Anime as a business is no longer profitable without generating after show income. Don't worry, there will be more singing macross as that is a sure hit in Japan to get income. I'm sure May'n and Walkure are thankful of Macross.
